I'd never seen one with a roller --a feature which, I expect, made it even more of a brute than the lighter models I grew up with. Yes, I expect that Nancy was, as you say, a pretty tough cookie.
As for the catcher, the lack of similar designs today might indicate it *wasn't* very effective. Maybe the cutterheads were geared to turn the reverse of usual, so that it threw the clippings forward? Just guessing.
A question on that scene, though, for any who know their lawns: Are daisies in England the same as daisies in the US, or do we have a trans-Atlantic translation issue here? Or simply a botanical difference?
Nancy says the GA was pointing out "daisies". (I think this is right; I haven't read PM in a while.) I've always had difficulty picturing that, as the daisies I know are tall, spindly things, and don't stand a chance of being allowed to get blooming on a lawn before someone sees them and cuts them down or roots them out. I always translated it, in my mind, as "dandelions", since I'm more familiar with them as a low-growing, easy to get out of control weed.
Any thoughts?
