Building on this comment, library funds are limited. When a library is deciding on what to purchase, and has the choice between a 70-year old book with language that is insulting to many, or a modern book with no such issues, they are probably going to purchase the modern book.

I am with the 'change the word' side- I would rather see AR as welcoming rather than turning people away. I might not say this for all books- as an alternative example, I believe that language of this sort is integral to Huckleberry Finn.
