That was the "B" (Bulb) setting. Open the shutter, fire the flash bulb (or powder) and close the shutter. As long as you didn't dawdle about the process, hand-holding would work. Dick needed a tripod in BS however so that they'd have the camera properly aimed in the dark, since otherwise they'd (he or Pete) have to get it into position before Tom or Bill fired the flash.
