I think one of the reasons why AR's own illustrations strike such a responsive chord with us (with me, at any rate) is the fact that some of them were reproduced on the book jackets. I remember early on selected Christmas mornings poring over the jackets in the faint dawn light, wondering just how the Master would flesh out those stark pen and ink drawings with the wonderful adventures I was beginning to appreciate. There was John - but what was he doing? And Nancy and Peggy. What were they up to? Funny thing is that although I know now what they were all doing, the fascination has never died. Even now, over 60 years later, I still get that same thrill of expectation when I open any of the books and begin to read. Ed Kiser knows what I'm talking about. Wait a minute. . . all of you do.
