Yes, black is often used in a negative connotation. And Yes it may have had racial overtones when used in a few instances, but I think that trying to eliminate every potentially negative metaphor from our lives would reduce our language to a very pale (negative connotation) shadow of itself. Darkness, shadow and night as well as just black all have some negative connotations, but these are not all related to people's skin tones.

Do only black people blackmail us? Perhaps it is just because we can't see in the dark that everything looks black when we can't see a way out of a situation. The evil Black Knight of King Arthur's time was probably not an African. The term black was used perjoratively in English well before most English speaking people had any experience of black people.
