Sometime ago I castigated ACB for not having taken his children to the Lakes.
In answer to his questions: yes it will be horribly crowded in August but yes, still worth visiting. Places to camp? The most obvious is at Bank Ground if they are still accepting tents. I'm afraid I found Coniston Hall (good for dinghy launching) rather too full of people behaving in rather Nancyesque ways (letting off fireworks at midnight) on my last visit (an anniversary of Kanchenjunga climb) for my increasingly G o M tastes.
I raved about Wostler's barn sometime ago, more PM than PM but you have to book and Low Wray the NT campsite on Windemere is very well situated (except for Peel Island).
