what with this emphasis on 'staycations', when I drove past some campsites - Low Wray and Hawskhead - at the end of last week, they were full. I wouldn't be surprised if all the others were too. So unless you can make a booking, I wouldn't waste your annual leave/travel costs!
Of course, you can legally camp above 400 metres on NT ground, out of site of buildings.
And anyway, the weather will be better in September...
