ML: Missed edit?

In ML, when ML takes them back into her English study for tea (Ch13), after ML has explained about the temple, and they're all apologizing for having intruded, it is Peggy, who was never at the temple, who apologizes: "We took some of your tea, too."

The question: Did AR goof, and in filling out the dialogue simply forget that Peggy wasn't there, OR, is this an artifact of an early draft, when the boats were not separated at night, everyone came ashore at the temple, and they remained together throughout the stages of capture by Chang, transport to Dragon Island, etc.?

We know AR wrote chapters out of order, writing whichever scene grabbed him. Did he write this scene and then, sometime later in the evolution of the story, realize the story would be much better if he split the group in two, went back and re-wrote, and this one line slipped past his edits?

I expect this question has come up before. Was there any consensus?

(And think of what might have been different, with them all arriving in a single group. Not better, not worse, just different.)

Alex
