I disagree that to be a successful adult Nancy would have to become domesticated. There were any number of adventurous females in the public arena during the twenties and Thirties. I'm thinking about the numerous aviatrixes, (Amy Johnson, Ann Davison, etc) and at least one Grand Prix driver that I know of, Ruth Urquhart-Dykes. I'm sure that they were as feminine as any other woman, but they retained that adventurous spirit.
