Looks as if the new user (me) has found the problem, thanks to a comment from Dave Thewlis. I use Firefox which is very good at filling in missing parts of URLs, e.g. I never need to type http://. I had been omitting www. from tarboard.net. This got me on and let me read posts but I got the error messages when I tried to post anything. A quick test post showed that the www. made the difference. Thanks everyone. Next time I'll post something AR related.
