The Hurley 8.3 (or 26) is a Dutch design which is based on the now-defunct British company Hurley Yachts designs back in the 1970s. They were considered to be fairly traditional, built for safety and comfort rather than speed and definitely quite adequate for long distance cruising in reasonable waters. Hurley 22s have crossed the Atlantic safely.

She had no intent to go south of the big Three Capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn, interestingly two of the three named by the Dutch) so suitability for the Southern Ocean is not a consideration.

my father had a Hurley 24/70 back in the early 1970s but sold it to buy a Ruffian 23 which was more fun in our local club races and still quite comfortable when we went on two week cruises from the Isle of Man up to the Hebrides. It didn't have standing headroom below, but generally you are sitting not standing when below and if you need to stand up then as Uffa Fox said "Go on deck".
