I've always inferred from Peggy's comments in SA that "Amazon" was either Capt. Flint's prior to his giving her to his nieces, or that he taught them to sail as part of the handover process. He certainly had marine experience, as he was able to pass on "marking" the harbour to Nancy and Peggy, even if he didn't tell them about "pilot books".
