Pemmican is a Cree indian word, and the traditional ingredients were dried meat crushed into a powder and mixed with melted fat, sometimes including dried pounded berries. It is not like beef jerky, which is very lean dried whole pieces of meat. One of the greatest assets of pemmican was the length of time it could last in a pouch--practically forever--and the high fat & protein combination made excellent marching rations. Sound familiar?
