Or how do you decide if the typo was in the author's original manuscript, one introduced by the printer but that he missed in the initial proof-reading, or one that crept into a later edition through any of a number of channels? I'd think it all comes down to the intended purpose of the transcription. Is it to be a snapshot in time, of a particular edition of the book in question, or is it to be Plato's "Ideal Chair" edition of the book?
