I don't claim this to be definitive, but a quick Google brought up this:
MONOTYPE KEYBANKS for the Lanston Monotype Keyboard. These keyboards use the standard typewriter qwerty keyboard layout with the exception that each alphabet has its own character keys.In other words there is no shift key etc. Instead there are separate rows of keys for the Italic, Small Caps, Bold etc.
So it looks like an r<>f typo would still be possible.
Checking a couple of items down turned up this:
Monotype D Keyboard (of 1908) incorporating several improvements, notably adoption of the universal typewriter layout of buttons allowing speedier touch operation and a simplified internal mechanism reducing the number of air valves from 225 to 33. The price was £135.
