Regarding the origins of the word, "FOREIGN",
reference WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY:

from the Latin, "faranus" on the outside; "foris" outside.
meaning: 1. situated outside of a place or country
2. born on, belonging to, or characteristic of some place or country
other than to one inder consideration.

The use of PLACE in the above means that "foreign" does NOT necessarily
imply SOME OTHER COUNTRY, as we probably normally take it to mean, so
the usage we have shown discussed here in this forum, which is used
to mean, "not 'local'", is certainly well within this definition.

Isn't is amazing how EDUCATIONAL Ransome has become! The things
we learn: how to "mouse your sister hooks," how to get the pintle
and the gudgeon properly mated, what it means to "step the mast", how
to "scull" over the stern, how to bank a fire so it keeps till morning,
how to make charcoal, how to guddle for fish, other usages for a
Woolworth plate, (on and on...)
