There were early outboards in the UK dating from the 1870's BUT they were steam powered with a 75 foot copper tube boiler inboard. The tube was coiled to save space and may have been fired by wood.
The first car petrol engines were in the 1880's.
It is easy to think of the petoleum engine as a the main prime mover, but up to 1910's steam was far more highly developed.
