I agree.

Ransome's juvenilia is dreadfully twee, which is why he suppressed it, of course, and these are the last vestiges of tweeness.

Interestingly, Tolkien does the same thing in "The Hobbit", and drops it in "The Lord of the Rings" - perhaps a learned reader could comment on whether Ransome remarked on the first person apostrophisings in "The Hobbit" when he read it and advised Tolkien on it.
