Interesting that Gore Vidal manages to write his piece without mentioning what is, in Britain at least, the best known of the stories, 'The Railway Children'. It's in the footnote, but not in the article.

Or am I wrong about that? I remember hearing it on the radio when I was little and of course much later I saw the film, but I was aware of the book when the others had hardly touched me at all- although I seem to remember the Bastable stories were on Children's Hour.
