This is very much an account of the Russian Revolutions and civil way as seen by AR while in Russia and the Baltic states. The author seems intent in exposing AR as a double agent in this period and criticises AR for accepting the views of a senior Bolshevik “without protest”. Yet at the same time the author seems to accept without protest hearsay and gossip in War Office telegrams. The book makes a number of assertions without providing evidence. Yes, there is a seemingly impressive list of sources consulted but there are no specific citations.
Much of the rest of the book appears to add little to the ‘Autobiography’, Brogan’s ‘Biography’, Hardyment’s ‘AR and Captain Flint’s Trunk’, AR’s Letters in Brogan’s ‘Signallg from Mars’ and Alexander’s ‘Ransome in Russia’.
And finally: a map or maps of what was going on where and when in Russia during the revolutions and civil way would have made the main central portion of the book much more understandable.
