I believe this was discussed here a short while ago, but I also believe no one mentioned that Slater Bob provides a clue in Pigeon Post, when he explains that Nancy and Peggy's grandfather had gone gold-mining in South Africa and taken the youthful Slater Bob with him. I don't have the book with me, so I can't remember if the grandfather was Mr. Blackett's father or Captain Flint's father, but either case could explain Molly Blackett's apparent independent fortune (assuming the gold mining was successful!).
