Thank you, to whomever wrote the Treasure Island link in that long "Writing in the first person" thread. I did go to the Wikipedia link and it was interesting. But even more important to me were the links and references, since at last I have found the name of a book and its author that I have been searching for, for decades.

It was listed under sequels and prequels. Long ago, I had read a book telling the story of Ben Gunn and his friend Nick Allerdyce, whose bones formed the pointer in Treasure Island. It tells of how they became pirates, and how Long John Silver lost his leg and how Flint died.

I remembered it as being well written, and it is! I got a copy through an Amazon dealer and am reading it. To my great surprise, it was written in 1956 by none other than R.L.Delderfield, whose other works I enjoyed in the 1970's and 80's. Its name is "The Adventures of Ben Gunn, and I can't recommend it enough, to those of you who haven't read it.
