John, that would be "Return to Treasure Island", by Denis Judd (1978). No, I haven't read it but looked for it on the Wikipedia list here;

In other versions, there was also a movie, "Long John Silver", and then a TV series, all starring Robert Newton as Long John Silver. I really love his portrayal and the way he speaks, and I was able to get a DVD of the tv series which wasn't shown here in the US where I grew up.

Although Treasure Island as a film has been remade many times, including starring Orsen Wells, I don't see why anyone bothers since Robert Newton is so perfect. But then filmmaker try to re-do "A Christmas Carol" and I don't think anyone could possibly top Alister Sim in that.

The Delderfield book is really first rate - I have read over half of it now since I posted. Since you remember the sequel as following RLS's style, I had better look up that one too. Hopefully, the author had read Delderfield's book, since it provides so much backstory material.
