I suspect that "The Seaman's Handybook" and "Simple Cooking for Small Households" never existed as such. I think Ransome conjured up generic titles. The Admiralty "Manual of Seamanship", in three volumes, would have been too much for a boy; the 1928 edition is, however, great fun should you wish to know how to lay out your kit for inspection, how to make all the boatswain's calls, how to embark ammunition aboard a Royal Sovereign class battleship and so on.
