My Cape first edition of The Picts and The Martyrs has an illustration on the spine of the dust jacket showing Dick, Dorothea, Nancy, Peggy and the boatbuilder, I guess, preparing Scarab for her first sail. It doesn't appear in the text. Having admired Kirsty Cochrane's essay on AR's illustrations I find it interesting that this illustration doesn't follow the common "over the shoulders" view of events. Perhaps that is why it was dropped from the text. Does this illustration occur on all dust jackets? Does anyone know more about its history?
