What do modern TARS do these days when out doing TARSy things?

I'm a mere semi-detached online kind of TAR, but of course I carry a Victorinox knife at all times. Except when getting on a plane (I have forgotten, and after I'd checked my bags I had to post the thing back to myself). But I've never been without one. The high point was getting stuck in a lift in Turin town hall with a film crew. We got the door open between floors and, using the camera pan handle and the faithful knife we got ourselves out through the gap...

My dad gave me a pen knife when I was about six, and we'd regularly buy extra ones whenever we felt the need. His feeling was that no boy was properly equipped for life without a pocket knife. Of course he was right.

The Spartan model I have now was bought in Geneva; the proprietor of the shop had dealt with Victorinox for decades, and told me that during the summer holidays, if he rang the factory for something, old granny Elsener would answer- while everybody else was away, she stood in in true Switzerdeutsch family style.

My brother in law, who lives in Basel, found one in the gutter with a broken blade. He sent it in with a request for a repair for which he offered to pay. It came back fixed, and free...

At my advanced age, the true secret of usefulness is to get one with a corkscrew, and then buy the tiny watchmaker's driver that screws in to the corkscrew. They cost pennies, and I have used mine more often than I can say to tighten the tiny screws in the side branches of glasses... Not something the S, As & Ds would have had much call for, except maybe for Dick.
