The great pity is that had the LAT management approached this project differently the steamboat museum could have remained open while the restoration works were being carried resulting in an obvious financial benefit to the museum, the local tourism industry as well as continuing to provide an ongoing venue for the model boat and flying clubs which previuosly used it.

I fear that because the LAT has allowed the original boat houses to run down during its tenancy it is now impossible to save them and to reopen the collection to the public in the meantime while various sources of funding other than the HLF are investigated.

Perhaps the LATs are gulity of acting irresponsibly with regard to the museum in that they should have considered other stragies which did not rely on receiving such a massive multi million pound hand out from the HLF and which would have allowed the museum to remain open.

The preposterousness of obtainig such a high level of funding is clear when one considers that the grant for the recent improvement of Windermere was 2million and Amblesdie water fornt is to coast 3 miliion

The public and particularly the residents of Bowness and Windermere now have the right to know exactly what the LAT propose for the site now, when this very important tourist attraction is to re-open, how it is to be done and what is the anticipated cost.
