Public school holidays (including AR's Rugby) in the 1950s/60s were basically 1 month at Christmas, 1 month at Easter, 2 months in Summer.
Half terms were 3 days and as boarders we had a quarter term which was basically Satuday afternoon and Sunday. Normally Saturday was a full day with lessons in the morning and sport in the afternoon.

I suspect he may have modelled the S&A's, all of whom seemed to board on his own public schoool holidays. However in WH the holiday would seem to have ended earlier. But, as we have seen in SD, AR had difficulties with dates and never let any confusion over dates to get in the way of a good story.
