I could have written it: he put only the most mild stuff into his books; reality was much more exciting.
In WH, the children went skating on the tarns. In southern Alberta, at the same age as Nancy and John, we drove our old Model A Fords and other assorted junk on to the frozen prairie sloughs - sometimes several acres in size - tied on 40 foot lariats and drove them as fast as possible until they would start to do "donuts" and spin whomever was tied on the ends, off on a wild, uncontrolled ride until they went aground, so to speak, on the frozen shore. This was considered great fun. Of course, there would always be a few .22s, shotguns, and an occasional rifle around just in case a coyote needed shooting.
But, John I never did steal a Mounties'car. They were probably 20 miles away, and sleeping in their feather beds.
