I understood that the Swainsons (Mary et al) in AR's books were the only family in the district whose name he didn't invent. I've assumed that this was because he felt a closer connection to the original Swainsons than he did to others of the local citizenry. If so, perhaps it was because it was because of that particular soft spot for Peter Swainson himself?
