Just some irrelevant personal reminiscences prompted by Jon's offer...

I've never been on Peel Island but my closest approaches to it were in
1990 when I was on holiday based at Coniston village. Viewing it from
the eastern shore of the lake I was impressed by its obvious similarity
to Wild Cat. The only disappointing aspects were its extreme smallness
and extreme proximity to the east side of the lake. The channel seemed
both narrow and shallow. I felt that I could have waded to the island.
Perhaps the lake was lower than usual - it had been a hot dry summer.

On one occasion I observed that a couple had landed in a motor boat
(if I remember correctly they'd used the hidden harbour) and the female
member of the couple was topless. Not the sort of thing AR put in his
books! It was the second week of September, just as it is now, but
excellent weather for the time of year. I wish Jon similar luck!

Another day I rowed from Coniston village to the island and back
but did not land. The need to return the boat for 5pm would have
given me only a couple of minutes on the island, so I decided to
leave the pleasure of landing for a future visit when I could have
more time - a visit I've never yet got round to making.

Incidentally, as AR remarks with regard to the North Pole in WH,
nowadays everywhere is owned by somebody. Does anybody know who owns
Peel Island, and more generally, other islands in the Lake District?
