I don't think that there is any doubt that Ransome was involved with MI6 in some way or other.
He had a code name but maybe he was given that to conceal his identity as just an unofficial informant who passed on snippets of news rather than as an active agent given a specific task or mission to uncover or clarify issues in the Bolshevik policy or government.
