Perhaps AR, when he was there, did not notice the midges. Don't forget that both Evegenia and AR were pipe smokers.
In the days when I used to enjoy smoking a pipe, there were brands of pipe tobacco that seemed to keep midges at bay. The thick dark lakeland shag tobaccos that AR seemed to enjoy are effective against midges.
I seem to remember also that Lambert & Butlers "Log Cabin" was also effective.
My wife, who is suscptible to midges was fine when she was by my side, but if she wandered off - every midge in the area would home in on her.
To put this in a GN context, everyone around CF would be fine. I do not know if the Gaels smoked or just ignored the midges.
