The lead split when the water inside the pipes froze.

Oh don't... I remember the winter of 60-something, in the days before CO2 when we got cold snaps, when the waste pipes of my parents' house in Earl's Court froze solid. At least it wasn't the supply, but it was still horrid. In the best British tradition the pipes were external, on a tall house. I remember leaning far out of a window pouring boiling water from a kettle down the wall. It worked, too, after a time, and many kettles.

Several years later, visiting my Mum's flat in Sheen, I saw water creeping in through the fireplace. I remember thinking 'What the hell is going on?' Then I went outside and listened carefully, and I could hear running water in the next door house. They were away, and the cold had burst the feed pipe where it reached the water tank. All the windows were covered in condensation inside. I called the water company (Thames Water then, I think) and they came and stopped the supply. The inside of the house had simply been destroyed by the water- and it had crept into my mum's flat via the common chimney.

English plumbing... Hah!

I can see the advantages, in the North, of doing without running water.
