There is a speed limit of 10 nautical miles per hour on Coniston Water with an exception granted for genuine attempts at speed records during the closely supervised annual speed records week. A 10 nmph speed limit was put onto Windermere (6 nmph in some areas) in the byelaws of March 2000..... however there was a 5 year lead-in period with no enforcement until March 2005 to enable local businesses (water ski schools etc) to diversify. As a consequence of the speed limit Windermere is a quieter and calmer lake with more small boat sailing, canoe paddling etc than in the past.
