Hang on Mike, surely S&A WAS set in the twenties! As for 'pirates', that is how the Amazons describe themselves. l Have to admit I'm looking forward to this production with mixed feelings, one of which is trepidation. I like Neil Hannon's work but have difficulty seeing it in the context of S&A. As for 'a black actor' we shall have to see. I've been reflecting on this for a while, My assumption was that the Amazons would be played by not one but two black actors (which might indeed be the case - v odd otherwise) which would lend an interesting dimension to the Robinson Crusoe theme of the book, and indeed, if this is not unpacking the theme too much, reflect the fact that wherever British explorers went and planted the flag, there were people who could claim, like the Amazons, that they were "here first' and were usually dark-skinned.
And it appeals to inner-city kids. Good thing, eh?
