Don't knock the 1960's series too much. I was about 9 when I watched it and I've been a life-long fan ever since. Perhaps my critical perceptions were undeveloped, and I had not read Ransome before seeing the production, so had no pre-conceived ideas, but the series really grabbed me. I remember identifying with Roger and being bowled over by the dynamism of the Amazons. When I saw the 1974 film I was less impressed by the casting, especialy Ronald Fraser as Capt. Flint. The actor who played this role in the 60's series wasn't a bit as described by AR in the books, being younger and bearded but I remember he was much more threatening in his confrontation with the swallows and really added an edge to story.
I do find the snippets of the production, which have appeared from time to time, slightly twee, after 40+ years, but as I said, as a child I found the series captivating, and all these years later - I', still enthralled!
