Certainly Andrew the slums of the time that AR sets his books were appalling by today's standards. they also were predominately white.
having said that I think editing the books would be a mistake, they should reflect the period in which they are set,
With a staged production and a musical to boot, which does not follow by the letter the original story, then there is a case for being politically correct maybe.
