Robert Dougal's Night Song of the Last Tram, a poignant (and factual) account of growing up in Glasgow's slums, refers a couple of times to the author as a young boy borrowing Ransome's works from the local library. His escapism through the stories, and his abject shock at the quite different lives of the middle & rural classes are both really very moving.
