Thank you for that response Andrew, and my apologies for not following up sooner. When I made my first comments about the S&A musical production it was you I had in mind, but did not want to go down a route that I thought you would have something to say about (nor to presume I 'knew' you views!)

The review of the musical in The Times by Libby Purves (a sailing and I think a Ransome enthusiast) was very positive and though illustrated with a photograph of 'Titty' no mention was made that she was played by a black actor. Is this The Times sitting on both sides of the fence?

Your comment about the D&Gs is a very good counter argument for those (such as the musical's creators) that Ransome has to be made more 'relevant' or 'accessible' to an audience with wrongly assumed needs.

My other comments about having a Russian wife only occured to me as I typed the post, though there is a hint of such attitudes in John Berry's book.
