Actually Peel Island IS big enough to camp on! There is a lovely long
sheltered hollow where WG Collingwood found the remains of a Viking age
settlement. I don't have my notes here, but I paced off the distance,
and it would be huge for a camp.

Also, Arthur Ransome and the Collingwoods used to camp there, and Taqui
mentions doing the same. Nowadays, camping is forbidden by the National
Trust as are fires. (I wish we could get a TARS dispensation)!

I have a log entry of my visit there years ago, including puting out a fire
that was smouldering in the topsoil. Also an inviting picture of the inflatable
boat that I bought in Bowness, with the island in the background.

I'll post them here if there is interest. Also I could scan my picture of
the big open camp space.
