I wouldn't defend bowdlerising, as with AR you do have to look at context and intention. I'm always reminded in such discussion of my late maternal grandmother who was born just at the end of the Victorian era - she always called a certain shade of brown paint by the N word, she had grown up knowing it as that (in a lower middle class family) and it did not occur to her to be or was intended by her to be offensive.
