Just read your reply to my posting about bowdlerizing. While I agree that Edid Blyton did write to a formula, my local library refused to stock her works because she used the occasional racial epithet. I know because I asked. Most of the people around here, anyway, wouldn't recognize formulaic writing if it bit them on the backside. Look at the pupularity of the Herlequin romances, for example.
