I just read this one- haven't gotten to the rest as they aren't easily available via library loan.

It was surprisingly modern- very early on, Bill tells us that Dad isn't absent because he's in the Navy, teaching at university, or, as in the case of Mr. Blackett, deceased. No, Dad has divorced the mother, moved to Canada, and, oh yeah, isn't paying his child support. Bill and family are pretty accepting of this, but it's clear that they see Bannermere as a way to save money on rent. (I guess the mother, like Mrs. Blackett, lives on some sort of inherited income- if she has a job, it's not a visible one)

I enjoyed the book very much- the book is told through Bill's ("I want to be a writer") viewpoint. The mystery, while being slightly over the top, isn't amazingly so- Sir Alffed doesn't turn out to be a spy, nor are there counterfeit millions to be found. The children's reward is a few hundred pounds, nice, but not likely to change their lives.
