I actually suspect that AR himself was more interested in his invented geography in some ways. When I read the canon in the early 1950s in America, I had no idea or feeling what if anything was real geography, but somehow the Lake books resonated more strongly with me, and the places seemed somehow more "real" than the actual real ones. (Admittedly I had a suspicion from all the "real" place names folded into CC and BS that they almost had to be real, but they never were as strongly in focus somehow.)
