There is one reference in CN to Woods

“Later’n you say.” The voice, a woman’s, sounded close beside them. They heard the lorryman jump to the pavement. “Evening, Mrs. Woods,” they heard Pete’s father say.

“Here’s your tea,” said the woman’s voice. “You’ve a rum load this time. Will you be back tomorrow night?”

“Day after,” said the lorryman. “Better come, too, Mother.”

“I’ve more’n enough to do at home to want to go travelling with you in that draughty old cab.”

“You can travel in the cruiser,” laughed Pete’s dad, and Pete, Joe and Bill thought for one dreadful moment that she would say “Yes”.

“Let’s go, Mum,” a little girl’s voice broke in.

“Drat that kid,” hissed Joe.

“Right O. I’ll take Molly,” said the lorryman.

“Molly wouldn’t leave her Mum behind, would you, Molly?”

No answer came from Molly, but Pete’s father said, “Come, the both of you. She’s comfortable enough inside. Electric light. All you want. Climb up and have a look …”

“We’re done,” whispered Bill.

“Get away with you. I’d sooner travel in a hearse,” laughed the woman. “Molly and me know home’s best.”

The stowaways dug each other in the ribs.

“Well, if you won’t come you won’t, but don’t say I never ask you. Goodnight, Mother. Goodnight, Molly. We’ve far enough to go.”

“Goodnight, Mrs. Woods. So long, Molly.”
