Who are these people?

Recently I acquired an early American edition of Pigeon Post (2nd impression, 1937). Mary Shepard's line drawings in the text are delightful, but I was startled by the dustwrapper (detail below, with apologies for the poor scanning quality):



Presumably the three figures on the right are supposed to be John, Roger, and Dick. That would make the crouching figure wearing a beret and with his back to us Dick (since that is the only one who could be wearing spectacles), and, Heaven help us, the two languid ginger-haired eighteen-year-olds on the right must be John and Roger. As for the wild-eyed and wild-haired blond on the left, she looks as if she has stepped straight out of the pages of a romantic novel by D. Callum or B. Cartland.


Suggestions, please.
