Thanks, Dave, for showing us the Grosset & Dunlap cover. As I read the cover, S&A- lake, island, dinghies and the rest - is shown by the illustrator to be merely part of a (fictitious) story being told at the camp-fire by the (real) Tom Sawyer-like figure. If so, this was not the the first time such a 'Peter Duck' interpretation had been given to the book: see the review in The Scotsman of 28th July 1930..
