I've always understood Furness to equate to 'Lancashire beyond the sands'
which, for the information of anyone reading this who doesn't know, existed until the creation of Cumbria in 1974, and included a big wedge of the southern Lake District, including Coniston (town, Water and Old Man) and almost reaching to Ambleside.
