I think Ransome was, very appropriately for a children's writer, writing books that are set "now" or, at least, "last summer".
WDMTGS was first published in November 1937, after the radar masts had been erected at Bawdsey.
BS has a nice reference to the way the Wilderness "used to be" and this is the only case I can think of where a story is framed in a oast that is different to the present.
